The 1860 map showing the gin house and the master's house surrounded by slave quarters
A number of houses have sprung up across the plantation. In essence, Barrow's Plantation has become a small thriving community complete with a church and a school.
Even though it looks like these children are enslaved, the real fact is that these children are free slaves working on the plantation on their own free will. In order to provide for themselves and their families, free slaves had to engage in sharecropping with their former master's.
This 1883 map of Oglethorpe county hints at the location of Barrow's Plantation by mentioning the town of Syll's Fork.
